The Maasai craft and ornaments represent these people’s way of living and identify them – their colors and meaning are well known worldwide.
At all important occasions and during celebrations they play an important role and they are also a good economical support. Every mother and woman makes the ornaments for the whole family to show how beautiful her family members are.
Colors also distinguish their area of origin. In some areas the yellow color is the preferred one, while in other areas the favourite color is blue. In our area, red and white certainly are the most used colors.
It is interesting to understand how different colors are combined: for instance, blue (brings good luck) must never be combined with black.
So, black represents the color of the African people and the color of the clouds when the rainy season starts, red is the color of the soil and of the blood of their cattle while white is the color of the milk, their basic nourishment.
